Don't cancel the direct debit before you notify them. Suppliers normally take a final reading and settle the account themselves, and cancelling early can leave the energy or water supply unbilled and in arrears.
What usually happens next
- Take a meter reading on or near the date of death if you can, and keep a photo of it.
- Welsh Water will usually either close the account with a final bill paid from the estate, or move it into the name of someone still living at the property.
- If the home will be empty, ask about keeping a minimum supply on for heating and insurance purposes.
