Register a death in the UK

In England and Wales a death must be registered within 5 days of the medical examiner's office telling you that you can, not from the death itself. In Scotland it is 8 days from the death, and in Northern Ireland 5 days. Find your local register office below.

Since September 2024 most deaths in England and Wales are first reviewed by a medical examiner. In many areas the register office will contact you to arrange the appointment once that's done, you may not need to book yourself.

Type where they lived, for example Bradford, Twickenham or SW1A 1AA. Postcodes find the office on their own.
