Who can order a death certificate?
Last reviewed October 2026
Death certificates are public records in the UK, so you do not need to be next of kin to order a copy. Certificates are cheapest when bought at registration. Later copies come from the register office where the death was registered, or from the General Register Office in England and Wales. In Scotland they come from National Records of Scotland or the local registrar, and in Northern Ireland from GRONI. You need the person's full name, date and place of death, and it helps to have the registration district.
Where to order later copies
By nation.
- England and Wales: the local register office or GOV.UK General Register Office
- Scotland: the local registrar or National Records of Scotland
- Northern Ireland: GRONI through nidirect
