What do you do if someone dies at home at night?

Last reviewed October 2026

If the death was unexpected, call 999. If it was expected, for example under palliative care, call 111 or the out-of-hours number the care team gave you. A doctor or nurse needs to confirm the death, which is called verification. After that there is no rush. You can stay with the person, and a funeral director can be called at any hour or the next morning. Registration and the medical certificate are daytime tasks that can wait until the next working day.

Tonight

Only a few things matter now.

  • Call 999 if unexpected, or 111 or the hospice line if expected
  • Wait for the death to be verified
  • Call a funeral director when you are ready
  • Contact close family

Tomorrow

Contact the GP about the medical certificate and start our checklist for what comes next.

Frequently asked questions

Can the person stay at home overnight?

Yes, after the death has been verified, if that feels right. Keep the room cool.

Will the police come?

For an unexpected death, police may attend as a matter of routine. It does not mean anything is wrong.
