The gap between the cheapest and the most expected option is thousands of pounds, and almost none of the difference is legally required.
Direct cremation, around £1,628
No service, no mourners, no hearse. Collection, a simple coffin, the cremation and the ashes back. Families usually hold their own memorial separately.

Get my checklistSimple attended funeral, around £3,828
A short service at a crematorium or church, a basic coffin, a hearse, and the funeral director's staff on the day. This is the most common UK funeral.
Traditional attended funeral, around £4,510
Everything in a simple funeral plus a better coffin, limousines for the family, flowers, order of service and often embalming and a viewing.
Burial with a service, commonly £5,000 to £9,000
The service costs the same as a cremation funeral; the plot and interment are the difference. Plot prices are set by the local authority or churchyard and vary enormously between areas, with higher charges for non-residents.
Natural or woodland burial
Burial in a designated natural burial ground, in a biodegradable coffin or shroud, usually with a tree or wildflowers rather than a headstone. Typically £2,500 to £5,000 all in, and often simpler to arrange than a churchyard burial.
Celebration of life
A celebrant-led gathering with no religious framework, held anywhere licensed to hold it: a hall, a hotel, a garden, a football club. Usually combined with a direct cremation, so the total depends almost entirely on the venue and catering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average cost of a funeral in the UK?
SunLife's Cost of Dying Report 2026 puts the average simple attended funeral at £3,828 and a traditional attended funeral at £4,510. A direct cremation averages £1,628.
Is burial more expensive than cremation?
Yes, usually by thousands of pounds, because of the cost of the plot and the interment fee. Council plot charges vary widely and are often much higher for people who lived outside the area.
Can we mix and match?
Yes. A common combination is a direct cremation followed by a celebration of life a few weeks later, which costs far less than a traditional funeral and gives people time to travel.
