What happens to a car when someone dies?
Last reviewed October 2026
The car becomes part of the estate. Tell the insurer straight away, because cover in the person's name usually ends or changes at death, and do not drive it until you have your own cover. Tell Us Once can notify the DVLA about the driving licence, but the vehicle record usually needs updating separately when the car is sold or passed on. If it was on finance, contact the finance company, as the agreement may need settling from the estate. Executors can then sell it or pass it to a beneficiary.
Checklist
Do these in order.

- Check finance or lease agreements
- Update the DVLA when the car is sold or transferred
- Cancel or transfer any parking permits and breakdown cover
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a dead relative's car?
Only with valid insurance in your name or covering you. Their policy usually stops covering anyone at death.
Do I need probate to sell a car?
Not usually. Executors can normally sell a car with the death certificate and proof they are dealing with the estate.
